A new marine energy park
British Energy Minister Greg Barker has designated the UK's south west as a new marine energy park.
Stretching from Bristol to Cornwall and beyond to the Isle of Scilly, south-west from the UK mainland, the Climate Change minister has said the region will set up a new collaborative partnership with universities and local authorities to further develop marine energy technology.
“The UK is already a world leader in wave and tidal power, so we should capitalise on this leadership to make marine power a real contender in the future energy market,” the Minister declared as he formally announced the new designation for the South West.
Local authorities in Plymouth and Cornwall are heading up the programme to turn the park into reality, building on the development of Cornwall’s Wave Hub offshore marine test centre, the Fab–Test nursery site at Falmouth, and a new marine science building at Plymouth plus research facilities at Exeter University and at the National Composites Centre in Bristol.
Private sector resources and commercial assets will be brought together by the two local authorities to form a partnership aimed at attracting investment into the region, and the acceleration of marine energy technologies.
