Total has declared a new commercial discovery in the Caspian Sea on the Absheron field today after evaluating results from a well drilled last year.

After drilling the Absheron X2 well which was announced last September, Total said today said  that the find could contain between 150 and 300 billion cubic metres (5-10 trillion cubic feed) of gas.

During testing the well flowed at 960 Mcm/d of gas with up to 2,500 b/d of 42.5° API  of condensate.

“The elongated structure straddles approximately 270 square-kilometres and the cumulative net pay is greater than 160 meters (524 ft) thick,” said Total.

Located 100 kilometres (62.5 miles) south east of Azerbaijan's capital Baku, the field could be developed with a limited number of wells during a first phase, the French oil major has suggested.

Forward work includes a 3D seismic survey to further assess the extent and the geometry of the Absheron structure.

Total operates the Absheron licence block with 40%, and Azerbaijan's state oil company holds another 40% and GdF Suex 20%.
