Statoil and utility Scottish and Southern Energy have started using a new UK onshore gas storage facility at Aldbrough near the Langeled gas pipeline.

Nine underground salt caverns have been excavated with seawater to create the gas storage facility and six of them are already are being used. Three more are due to become operational by summer next year, at a cost of £435 million.

UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry was at Aldbrough in east Yorkshire today to officially open the facility which will ultimately provide storage for million cubic metres of gas.

Kjetil Johnsen, managing director of Statoil UK underlined that the new facility will continue his company's commitment to supplying gas to the British market.

“Not only are we the largest supplier of natural gas to the UK, but we are actively investing to ensure that the security of supply is maintained and the demand for flexibility is managed,” Johnsen stated. “The UK needs to ensure that it can access reliable and flexible sources of gas for decades to come in order to efficiently meet its climate commitments. The Aldbrough gas storage facility is an important piece of the energy puzzle for Statoil, SSE and the UK.”
