All personnel were reported to be safe after a North Sea helicopter had to ditch into the sea near Aberdeen.

Operated by Bond Offshore, the EC 225 helicopter had been on its way from Aberdeen to two North Sea rigs, the Maersk Resilient and Ensco 102 jackup when it ditched with 14 personnel on board – two crew and 12 passengers, shortly after mid-day today, various reports indicated.

Bond was operating the flight on behalf of ConocoPhillips said which said those onboard were mainly contractors: Two are from Halliburton, other were from drilling contractor Ensco, and from contractors Brundt and Stag.

A Bond spokesman has told reporters : “A low pressure oil warning light came on and the helicopter made a controlled descent and landed in the North Sea. It didn't crash.”

All crew managed to scramble into life rafts and a major rescue operation was mounted and the crew and passengers were all taken back to Aberdeen for medical checks.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond was told of the incident and stated: “Thankfully it has been confirmed that all on board have been rescued and the indications are they will all be admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on a precautionary basis.”

Britain's Air Accident Investigation Branch has launched an inquiry into the incident.
