Appointment for Interconnector emergency repairs

Dutch experts have been selected to develop advice for repairing the strategically significant gas Interconnector between the UK and the Netherlands.

Independent Risk Management, based in Rotterdam, has been appointed by the BBL Company which owns and operates the BBL pipeline between Balzgand, near Den Helder in Holland, to the UK Bacton gas terminal, to provide advice on current and emergency pipeline repair systems.

As part of the work IRM has been contracted “... to produce a concept proposal that will provide a thorough assessment of the organisation’s current pipeline repair contingency plans and preparedness.”

The 36-inch BBL Interconnector spans 235 kilometres (146 miles), of which 230 km (140 m) is offshore and the system capable of supplying up to 15% of UK gas demand, and is therefore of strategic importance to Britain.

“Being fully prepared for emergency repairs under any circumstance is one of those subjects that requires continuous attention,” explains ans Boersma, offshore asset manager for BBL “In addition to the technical aspects, being organized is critical to acting decisively in emergency situations,” he added.

Accordingly IRM will look at current emergency pipeline repair systems (EPRS) and procedures, and advise BBL on the assets, availability, and the companies who will supply them if required.

One of the central elements of the work will be a cost-benefit analysis that will look at adopting an enhanced or even new EPRS, says IRM. “By doing so, decisions as to how best to move forward will be based on how investing in an EPRS will reduce downtime, costs and lost production in the event of an emergency repair,.” the company says.
