Subsea 7 gas been put in the driving seat by BP to deliver and install the subsea pipeline system for the West of Shetland Clair Ridge development.

Under a major US $100 million deal Subsea 7 has been appointed by BP to install oil and gas export lines which will connect with the two new Clair Ridge production platforms and an existing gas export line.

Today Subsea 7 revealed the award from BP and the contact scope covers project managing, engineering, procurement fabrication and installation  of a 6 kilometres (3.75 mile) 22-inch oil export line and a 14 km (8.75 mile) 6-inch gas export line.

Both of the new lines will linked into the two new production Clair Ridge platforms which are been built for installation north-east of the existing Clair phase 1 facility.

They will allow oil and gas production from Clair Ridge to be carried through the existing Clair export system to the Sullom Voe terminal in the Shetland Islands, via a dedicated gas export line which will be tied into the original Clair export line and associated gas will go through BP's West of of Shetland Pipeline System (WOSPS) – which also serves the Schiehallion and Foinaven fields.

WOSPS comprises a 20-inch West of Shetlands gas trunk line which runs 186 km (116 miles) to the Shetlands Sullom Voe terminal..

Subsea 7 says it will fabricate the new 22-inch oil export line at its Wick facility in Scotland, and it will be installed using its controlled depth tow method, while the gas line will be fabricated at its spoolbase in Vigra, Norway.

The project workscope also covers tying of integrated subsea towheads, field testing and pre-commissioning work on the new pipelines.

Offshore operations are due to commence next summer but Subsea 7 in Aberdeen has already commenced engineering work for the project.

Steph McNeill, vice president of Subea 7 in the UK said the new award builds on the copany's bundle pipeline technology. “Fabrication will take place at our Wick facility in Scotland, which has a proven track record of successful bundle design, fabrication and installation, securing work for approximately 100 people,” he added. “We look forward to helping bring on-stream the Clair Ridge Project in an efficient, timely and safe manner.”
