Breagh gas drilling begins

Drilling has commenced on one of the biggest UK Southern North Sea developments in recent years at the multi-platform Breagh gas project.

Jackup Ensco 70 has kicked off the development well drilling programme at the field which will be aimed to produce first gas in the third quarter this year.

Project partner Sterling Resources says the Ensco 70 has just kicked off work at the field: Two other previously drilled Breagh wells, 42/13-3 and 42/13-5Z, which were suspended for future use as producers, are to be sidetracked and then completed as producers for first gas later this year by the Ensco rig.

Field operator RWE Dea completed installation of a new 4,000 tonne Breagh Alpha platform at the western end of the the field in the UK Southern North Sea last October. A second platform is also due to be installed later as part of the approved field development plan.

They will be followed by up to eight more development wells which are due to be drilled over the next two years at Breagh, which spans two UK blocks, 42/12a and 42/13, in a water depth of 62 metres (203 feet).

Once the production wells are tied into the Breagh Alpha platform, gas will be processed then exported via a new 100 kilometre (62 mile) 20-inch pipeline – rated to carry up to 400 Mmcf/d of gas - to land at Coatham Sands in Redcar, and from there Breagh gas will go via a 10 km (6.2 mile) onshore line into the Teesside Gas Processing Plant, and from there into the UK National Transmission System.

RWE Dea operates Breagh with 70% and Sterling holds 30%.
