British-based AnTech is enjoying further success by serving the coiled tubing drilling market – onshore in the US.

AnTech based in Exeter in the UK south-west has recently carried out a series of coiled-tubing drilling operations in Kansas using its specially-designed and steerable five-inch Polaris drilling tool which has proven itself by being cheaper and faster than other steerable tools.

Working with Advanced Drilling Technologies using a hybrid land rig, AnTech has completed a series of three wells where Polaris was deployed to drill the Kansas Niobrara Formation.

According to AnTech, Polaris is now an affordable alternative to drilling 6 1/2-inch directional wells without an expensive rotary steerable drilling tool. Based on solid state gyros which allow the tool to remain on trajectory, the system dispenses with magnetic steering instruments, allowing it to be shorter and it is – the company claims - more easily steered.

During the Kansas CTD programme, AnTech's tool drilled an S-shaped directional well to nearly 3000 feet (914 metres) total vertical depth with over 600 ft (182 m) of lateral displacement. After another day of mobilisation, a second directional well was drilled to over 1500 ft (457 m) TVD with an average dog leg severity of approximately 7.5°. And a third well was drilled 1100 ft (335 m) TVD with 700 ft (213 m) of lateral displacement.

Furthermore the three wells were drilled below a river bed, under a hill and at the edge of a corn field, without disrupting an ongoing harvest, in locations without access roads or prepared drillpads, where only low margin operations are viable with tools that can be mobilised quickly and efficiently, with rapid drilling, AnTech claims..

Toni Miszewski, managing director of AnTech said: “Not only did the Polaris perform as intended, all three operations were completed quickly, with minimal impact on the environment.”

And ADT was pleased with the performance of its hybrid land rig: Ovi Alfaro, president of ADT declared: “Based on the success we have experienced using our hybrid rigs, we have always believed that an affordable, reliable downhole drilling system would revolutionise the directional market for CTD,” he said, adding: “Clearly, the Niobrara Formation operations prove that the Polaris tool used in combination with our hybrid rigs will achieve that.”

Next, the AnTech tool is due to be deployed on two horizontal wells, under the harsher conditions drilling with air.
