Cat B rigs launched for EOR

More moves are being made by Statoil to advance field development technology with a new type of rig geared towards enhancing oil recovery.

With the prospect of US $1.9 billion rig contracts on offer, Statoil is launching its new Category  B rig concept today, which the Norwegian operator says will be designed and built specifically to tap inaccessible oil in existing fields, in order to try and boost field recovery rates from the current level of 50% level.

Introducing the new concept today, Statoil's Margareth Øvrum, executive vice president of technology, projects and drilling, says the new rig type should be capable of cutting well intervention costs by up to 40%

“The category B rig is the result of long-term, targeted technology development to increase subsea well recovery rates,” Øvrum declared.

Contracts for the new rig type will be offered for up to eight years - with options for another six years – which will be worth up to $1.9 bn to the successful rig contractors.

The new rig type is to fill the gap between Category A light intervention vessels and Category C conventional rigs.

Development of the concept has been carried out with the offshore industry's supply chain, to “industrialise” drilling and well intervention operations on existing production wells. The new rigs will feature drilling and well control systems specially adapted for subsea well intervention, Statoil says.

They will be fitted out to provide both wireline and coiled tubing well intervention, and for drilling sidetrack wells from existing production tubing – called through tubing drilling (TTD) – via an existing subsea Christmas tree.  Also the units will be capable of ROV operations, well testing and cementing.

“New and improved well service methods provide a substantial contribution to increased recovery on the NCS,” explains Ivar Aasheim, Statoil's senior vice president of field development. He points out: “Statoil currently operates around 500 subsea wells, and we need efficient tools to maintain these.”

Aker Solutions has already been appointed to provide the new drilling unit after a previous rig design study based on Statoil specifications. Initially the new rig type is to be designed for year-round well service in Statoil-operated fields and the first units are due to go into service in 2015.

Aker says the well intervention system will be based on that developed by its own Aker Oilfield Services division for the Skandi Aker interventin ships, with a riser-based system featuring a high-pressure riser and well control package, connected to a subsea tree.

In February this year Songa Offshore landed a further specialised rig deal with Statoil worth up to US $2.6 billion to supply two extra Category D rigs – specialised and streamlined semi-submersible drilling units which were contracted for up to 12 years.

With the launch of the latest line of rigs there will also be a major opportunity to recruit new rig crews.
