Centrica is getting ready for the sailaway of its latest gas platform in the UK North Sea to tap the York field discovery which is due to come onstream early next year.

Fabrication of the deck and supporting steel jacket at Heerema's Hartlepool fabrication facility in the UK  is now complete and the two giant units are awaiting loadout and a move on to an installation barge to commence the offshore construction phase next month.

The York development features a a 1,200 tonnes not normally manned three-deck topsides platform with emergency overnight accommodation for up to 16 personnel and a six slot well bay, plus a 1,500 tonnes jacket.

Both structures are due to be installed by the Heerema Balder crane barge after Heerema Hartlepool built the structures under a EPCI contracted which was awarded February 2011, as part of a frame-work agreement under which Heerema also built Centrica's platform for the Ensign gas project.
Saipem's Castoro Sei is to install a 16-inch 34 km (21.25 miles) export line from the York platform back to the Centrica's Easington terminal.

One pre-production well has already been drilled at the eastern area of the field by the Noble Julie Robertson - which recently completed drilling on Ensign - and two more wells are due to be drilled into the South York area – which is through to contain the bigger part of the reservoir - once the platform is in place.  York is located just three kilometres (1.8 miles) from the Rough field and is separated by a fault line.

Greg McKenna, Centrica's Southern North Sea director, says York is over-specified and is designed to act as a future gas gathering hub once the York area is drained. “Currently we can only drain the reservoir so far, then we have to be sure there is no cross-drainage from the Rough field,” McKenna  revealed.

“The platform is designed as a hub with spare risers; the spare risers are for third party business,” he said. Also the 16-inch export line is designed for capacity of up to 120 Mmcf/d of gas, with more ullage (capacity) for third party business, and with a three-inch methanol line.

York field life is put at eight years but the platform is built for a 25-year lifespan, and features two 8-inch risers for subsea wells, two 12-inch risers and a spare slot for a third, four J-tubes for 18-inch   lines and two spare J-tubes.

Capital expenditure for York and Ensign together is put at £450 million by Centria – with York said to be costing twice as much as Ensign, which would suggest a capex figure for York alone at £300 million
