Independent African explorer Chariot Oil and Gas has secured rights to a new exploration block offshore Mauritania under a newly signed production sharing contract.

Chariot has secured 90% equity in offshore block C19, which covers 14,125 square kilometres, with a commitment to reprocess existing 2D seismic data and then undertake a 1,600 sq. km 3D seismic survey. After that, Chariot can then choose to move into an exploration drilling phase with Société Mauritaniennede Hydrocarbures (SMH), Mauritania's national oil company, which will have a 10% carried interest in the block.

Water depths in the block range from just 5 metres (16.4 feet) to 2,100 m (6,888 ft) and Paul Welch, Chariot's chief executive says the company aims to repeat the success it has had in neighbouring Namibia where petroleum systems are already proven, and where exploration is still immature.

“We believe that our experience, skill-set and capabilities, as demonstrated in Namibia, will enable us to unlock further potential in West African deep water assets,” Welch declared as the company announced the new block.
