A final investment decision on the UK Cygnus gas project is being targeted for the middle of this year which would unlock plans to build four new platforms for the North Sea.

Operator Gaz de France is understood to be aiming for internal sanction of the Cygnus project with a final investment decision due mid-year, Offshore.no/International has learned.

With a £1.2 billion capital expenditure figure, Cygnus is certain to be one of the major field investments in the UK sector of the in the new few years with up to four platforms thought necessary to tap the resources in the Southern North Sea gas field.

Bid packages are already out in the offshore market for heavy lift work, for platform fabrication and for installation of subsea facilities on Cygnus.

“Board sanction should take place mid 2012,” one familiar with the situation has confirmed.

One of the issues which needs to be resolved, it is understood, is that both Gaz de France and partner Centrica have sub-surface models of the Cygnus field and those will need need to be reconciled with one another before a field development plan is finalised. The third field partner is Bayerngas.

Also the final field layout needs to be finalised, based on the position of production wells, which in turn will dictate where the four platforms are to be installed within the field area.

It is expected that Cygnus will feature long horizontal wells but because of the likelihood of halite sediment contamination in wellbores, coiled tubing will be necessary to clean out these wells and coiled tubing can only run to a maximum of 8,000 feet, effectively restricting the length of horizontal wells in the field.

Heerema Hartlepool – which already has a frame agreement with Centrica for platform construction - is just one UK-based company which is looking at the Cygnus project to provide future fabrication orders.

Cygnus construction could provide work for the Hartlepool yard in the UK north-east for three to four years or more if the Cygnus platforms were to be built there, back to back.
