Newly appointed Energy and Climate Change secretary of State de Davey has reaffirmed the government's commitment to Carbon Capture and Storage in his first speech on the subject.

Speaking after a CCS industry day, Dave said the technology has the potential to “...transform man's relationsshi9p with fossil fuels.”

After meeting participants in the industry, the UK's Secretary of State for Energy and Climate said carbon capture and storage is “crucial” for the planet.

And underlining the government's commitment to CCS policy with £1 billion of funding, he said: “We want to work with industry to deliver a new, vibrant CCS programme by the 2020s that helps deliver our low carbon targets in a realistic and cost-effective way.”

And the Secretary of State added: “We are fortunate to have many promising proposals for CCS projects. It was a privilege today to hear of the high level of interest and commitment from industry. I look forward to working with the industry to turn our vision for CCS into reality.”

Shell's Goldeneye field in the North Sea is just one the UK offshore fields being considered for a carbon capture project.

Speaking at an Oslo Energy forum in Oslo earlier this month Energy Minister Charles Hendry also emphasised the UK's commitment to CCS with two CCS projects based at UK power stations  -  “We recently released front end engineering and design studies for both Longannett and Kingsnorth projects,” Hendry said in Oslo. And he also referred to working with Norway on realising the opportunities afforded by new large discoveries in Norway's High North region.

During the same speech Hendry also referred to investment by Statoil and Statkraft in the UK renewable energy sector: “Norwegian industry is already a significant investor in the UK renewables sector, notably Statkraft’s and Statoil’s joint ventures in offshore wind,” Hendry said. “The Sheringham Shoal windfarm is already producing electricity, and will be fully commissioned in the summer. We are keen to see the success of this project contribute to positive investment decisions on the larger Dogger Bank wind farm. At up to 13 GW this would be the largest in the world.

Statoil and Statkfraft are part of the Forewind consortium developing the UK's Dogger Bank wind farm region.

And Henry acknowledged the recent change in leadership at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change with the replacement of Chris Huhne by Ed Davey: “There may have been a change at the top of my Department, but the agenda remains the same. Norway is, and will remain, a close ally. The relationship between our countries has never been stronger. This doesn’t change our commitment to developing our ties with Norway, and other countries, to work together to develop our energy relationship,”  Hendry concluded.
