Deal for Shtokman platform design

Reports suggest that Gazprom subsidiary Gazflot has signed a deal for the design of an offshore platform for the Shtokman development which will be able to handle up to five helicopters.

According to the Barents Observer, Russia's Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering – which usually specialises in designing Russian submarines - has been selected by Gazflot to
carry out conceptual design work for the Shtokman platform, following a competitive tender.

“The conceptual design stipulates a platform with space for five helicopters, autonomous power supply, ready for round-the-clock and year-around operations in the north-eastern part of the Barents Sea where the Shtokman field is located,” the  Barents Observer said.

But there was no confirmation of the deal on Rubin's website earlier today.

Earlier indications by Shtokman development AG show a floating production unit which is to be anchored at the field location with the facility to easily disconnect from its moorings if icebergs present a hazard.

That illustration published by Shtokman Development AG shows a large floating facility connected to flexible risers - supported by mid-water arches - which connect to twin four-slot subea templates. The production facility features a helideck towards the bow and a gas flare stack on the stern.

Towards the end of last month Gazprom chairman Alexey Miller held a working meeting with Statoil chief executive Helge Lund to discuss the progress of the Shtokman development.

In a statement released after that meeting, Gazprom said the two discussed “key business issues and prospects for cooperation between Gazprom and Statoil in the European gas market.

The two men were also said to have “appraised the progress with preparations for phase one of the Shtokman development,”  and “...Considered further steps on the way to the project execution.”
