Denmark's Little John well finds oil

Drilling offshore Denmark has resulted in a new oil find on the Lille John prospect near the Gorm field.

PA Resources reports that the Lille (Little) John prospect drilled in licence 12/06 and located 17 kilometres (10.6 miles) south of Gorm has hit up to five metres (16.4 feet) of net oil pay within a Miocene shale and sand interval extending to 25 metes (82 ft) of thickness.

“Initial analyses of logs and samples confirm a sweet, light oil of 34-35 degrees API gravity with a gas:oil ratio of approximately 350 scf/bbl and no water,” PA Resources has declared.

The find is also just 8 km (5 miles) from PA's Broder Tuck discovery which was discovered in July.

Lille John was well-imaged on seismic data as an extensive seismic amplitude anomaly said PA Resources, and this was interpreted before drilling to reflect gas or oil in a sandstone reservoir. But the well was not optimally located for the Miocene sand, because it was just outside the area of the seismic anomaly and close to the mapped limit of the Miocene sands.

“The well encountered modest reservoir development as expected at this location marginal to the seismic anomaly but has confirmed the anomaly to represent oil-bearing sandstone, with an apparent column height in excess of 300 meters (984 ft),” stated PA.

But the well has been unable to penetrate a main Chalk target or an underlying and secondary Middle Jurassic drilling target  “....due to an unexpected pore pressure regime and extensive fracturing at Chalk level.” Consequently the well is now to be sidetracked to try and hit the Chalk to test for fluids and reservoir development.

“This is a very encouraging result at a stratigraphic level which has not generally been explored in Denmark,” pointed out PA's president and chief executive Bo Askvik.

Danish licence 12/06 is operated by Askvik's company through PA Resources UK Limited with 64%, and the other partners are the Danish North Sea Fund with 20%, and Danoil and Spyker Energy each with 8%.
