Development studies start for Maria

Centrica has signalled that its Maria prospect offshore Norway could shape up into a new development after an appraisal well confirmed oil.

An initial view of the results of a recent appraisal well on Maria has suggested that the reserves in the discovery could be towards the top end of the original estimate and in the region of 60 to 120 million barrels of oil equivalent, plus 10 to 30 m bboe of gas.

“We will now be working with our partners to consider field development options,” the Windsor, UK-based company said today.

Centrica, which has trebled the size of its presence in Norway through the acquisition of a string of assets from Statoil and ConocoPhillips for £1.1 billion which was completed in April, says it will now work with its partners Wintershall and Petoro to determine if Maria can be commercially developed.

Wintershall has 50% of the Maria equity and operates the find. Petoro holds 30%.

“Maria marks another great achievement for Centrica Energy,” commented Jonathan Roger, managing director of Centrica Energy Upstream. “This is our second successful well in the past six months and we look forward to working with our partners on further opportunities going forward.”

Maria, in which Centrica holds 20% equity, was first discovered in 2010 when the gross size of the find was originally estimated at between 60 and 120 m boe of recoverable oil and 2-5 bcm (10-30 mmboe) of recoverable gas.

Last December Centrica indicated that its Butch exploration well in the Norwegian sector of the Northern North Sea had hit between 30 and 60 m boe of light oil.
