Total's official statement on the North Sea  Elgin emergency says production has been halted at the field although the gas leak was continuing.

In a bulletin issues at 9pm last night updating the North Sea situation Total E&P UK said the gas leak at the Elgin platform was “ongoing” adding “...although the situation is currently stable.”

Total said it was: “....Continuing to take all possible measures to try to identify the source and cause of the leak and bring it under control.”

Also a “sheen” has been discovered on the surface of the water  in the platform's vicinity, indicating a hydrocarbon release into the sea. Totals says Oil Spill Response has carried out two surveillance flights over the area to assess the extent of the spill.

“Initial reports from OSRL indicate no change in the size and appearance of this over the course of the day,” the operator indicated last night and two further two flights were due to be carried out today.

Also Total has had to explain events to SOSREP – the UK Secretary of State's Representative, and to the Health and Safety Executive, Marine Scotland and the Coastguard, as well as the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Experts within Total have been deployed to try and help with identifying the cause of the hydrocarbon leak and remedy the situation.

“At this stage, the precise cause of the leak remains unclear,” Total admitted last night, adding: “Now that all personnel are in a place of safety, all our efforts continue to focus on bringing the gas leak under control.”

Last year Britain's Health and Safety Executive recorded 73 major and significant hydrocarbon releases in the North Sea in the year to March 2011, which was a “notable reduction” on the 85 recorded in the prior year. Also there were 94 minor releases, down 7.8% from 102 the previous year.
