Work to halt the gas leak on the UK Elgin G4 well has kicked off

Total has started work to try and kill the gas condensate leak on the Elgin wellhead platform by pumping heavy mud into the well, via a temporary pipeline connected to the G4 wellhead on the platform, Britain’s Department of Energy and Climate Change said today.

Mud is being pumped from the West Phoenix semi-submersible.

According to DECC, mud pumping will be followed by a period of monitoring to see if the action has worked, and this could take several days, depending on conditions.

“The dynamic kill is the quickest option to control the release. Work on another option to drill a relief well is already underway,” DECC stated.

And a spokesman for the government department added: “We continue to monitor the situation closely and hope this operation successfully stops the gas release.”
