A keel-laying ceremony has been held for the second of two heavy transport ships being developed by Oslo-listed Fairstar.

Officials from Fairstar Heavy Transport  were at the ceremony at Guangzhou Shipbuilding International's dry dock in Qidong, China, watched as the first of 272 blocks were laid down for the new ship Fairstar vessel Finesse, which will eventually join its sister-vessel Forte

Already Guangzhou has built 240 of the 272 ship blocks required to complete the new 50,000 tonne vessel, and the Forte is already floating along a quayside at the shipyard.

“We are mindful of the additional challenges now posed by having two ships under construction simultaneously,” declared Willem Out, Fairstar's chief operating office. But he went on: “However we are certain that GSI has the necessary resources to finish both the Forte and Finesse on schedule. We look forward to inviting our shareholders to witness the floatation of the Finesse out of the dock in 2012.”

Rotterdam-based Fairstar already operates two other transport ships, the Fjord and Fjell.

Both the Fjord and Forte are to be used to provide extended transport services for Chevron Australia's Gorgon gas to LNG development for which the two units will be used to transport various modules starting mid-2012 in a newly-secured deal worth US $19 million. Fairstar's Fjord and Forte will be working on the Gorgon project for 13 and 17 months respectively under the extended deal.

Originally the two ships were previouisly contracted by Chevron for Gorgon-related transport work and with the new assignments the total value of Fairstar's work for the proejct is now worth $110 m.
