Falkland Islanders to vote on future status

Falkland Islanders are going to the polls next year to decide whether or not they remain as a British protectorate.

The Falklands Islands Government has announced that a new sovereignty poll will take place in the first half of next year in a bid to finally resolve Argentina's claim over the islands – and its proven oil resources.

Announcing the move yesterday – the date was significant as it was 30 years since the British Army took a final surrender from the Argentinian garrison in the Falklands capital Port Stanley on 14 June 1982 after a short, brutal, bloody war – the Falklands Islands Government said the move was designed to give Islanders a chance to vote on their future.

Gavin Short, chairman of the Falkland Islands legislative assembly, announced the referendum on political status, saying with confidence that he expected Islanders to vote in favour of staying within the protection of the UK.

He said: “I have no doubt that the people of the Falklands wish for the Islands to remain a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. We certainly have no desire to be ruled by the Government in Buenos Aires, a fact that is immediately obvious to anyone who has visited the Islands and heard our views.”

Short said yesterday that the Argentine government  “...deploys misleading rhetoric that wrongly implies that we have no strong views or even that we are being held hostage by the UK military,” - a reference to the fact that the Falklands has had a much larger military garrison there since the 1982 war to protect the islands from any future Argentine invasion.

And Short continued: “We have thought carefully about how to convey a strong message to the outside world that expresses the views of the Falklands people in a clear, democratic and incontestable way. So we have decided, with the full support of the British Government, to hold a referendum on the Falkland Islands to eliminate any possible doubt about our wishes. This referendum will be organised by the Falkland Islands Government and will take place in the first half of 2013.”

Independent international observers are to be invited to see the poll take place and verify its outcome.

“We are holding this referendum not because we have any doubts about who we are and what future we want, but to show the world just how very certain we are about that,” Short said.
