Bristol-based GL Garrad Hassan is working with a Japanese industry giant better known for building motorbikes in developing a new tidal energy device.

Garrad Hassan in Bristol is linking up with Japanese motorcycle manufacturer and industrial giant Kawasaki to work on development and deployment of a 1 Megawatt tidal turbine prototype which is being aimed for deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre in the Orkney Islands off the northern Scottish coast.

Technical information and guidance on tidal resource and technologies is being supplied by the GL Garrad Hassan office in Bristol to help with development of the new prototype which is being created by the Kawasaki Tidal Energy Project.

Staff at the Bristol-based consultancy have supplied Kawasaki with a tidal stream training course which was delivered in March this year, supported work on case load definitions and checking load calculations. GL Garrad Hassan has also supplied its design software, Tidal Bladed, and site analysis tools for handling metocean data, for the benefit of the Kawasaki group.

“The arrival of large power sector manufacturing companies in the emerging tidal energy arena is very positive,” said Dr Robert Rawlinson-Smith, head of the Garrad Hassan's Tidal Energy Group. “As well as sending out a strong message about the potential future of the industry, they bring a wealth of experience and financial backing that could deliver a significant and welcome shift in the pace of development,” he added.
