Approval has been given to remove oil from a Shell pipeline in the North Sea which leaked last year.

Shell UK has been given a green light to remove oil from the carrier pipe in the Gannet oil line in the Central North Sea following a leak which was stopped in August last year.

Oil will be recovered from the 4 km (2.5 mile) line at  depth of 91 metres (300 feet) and then the flowlines in the carrier pipe will be flushed clean in a second  operation which is planned to take place next Spring, when any remaining oil will also be removed.

The Gannet field area was been kept under aircraft surveillance for a time after the leak was stopped last year and no subsequent leak was found.

The leak from the Gannet F subsea installation which links with Shell's Gannet Alpha platform, was was first reported on 10 August last year.

In another oil leak incident, Britain's Department of Energy Climate Change says it has been unable to pinpoint the source of hydrocarbons which were seen forming a sheen on the surface of the sea last month.

An oil sheen was detected lying 3.7 km (2.3 miles) from the pipeline connecting the Galley subsea field to Tartan Alpha platform - both operated by Talisman Energy UK after being spotted on 28 August this year. The size of this leak was originally estimated to be between 32 tonnes and 132 tonnes of oil. Later aerial observations reduced the estimate to between 5 and 34 tonnes of oil.

Subsequently on 30 August DECC said oil samples from this leak which were analysed by Talisman indicated it has not come from its nearby Galley field. Also aerial surveillance further downgraded the size of the leak to four tonnes, and it was reported to be dispersing naturally.

“The source of the sheen remains unknown with installations in the area reporting that operations remain normal. DECC is continuing to investigate and monitor the situation in cooperation with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Marine Scotland,” DECC stated then.
