Energy giant Centrica's UK headquarters in Windsor have been blocked this morning by Greenpeace protesters angry about rising domestic bills.

In a public stunt designed to attract maximum publicity the protesters have blocked the front entrance to the company's  prestigious UK headquarters with a giant energy bill – measuring 260 square feet.

More “bills” have been used to block other entrances to the site, near Windsor racecourse and Windsor Castle. And five of them have gone inside, trying to find the offices of Centrica chief Sam Laidlaw, the group said.

“All the entrances have also been sealed with large bills, which have been printed on to sheets of wood and locked to the doors,” Greenpeace says. “Hundreds of employees of the British Gas parent company are expected to be turned away.”

Greenpeace says it has mounted the protest over increases in average energy bill by £150 in the last year. And the environmental protest groups claims £100 of this was solely due to rising gas prices, according  based on to figures from Ofgem, the UK government’s energy watchdog. “Direct subsidies for renewable energy have increased little over the last few years and make up only £25 of the total average annual bill,” the group claims.

Lawrence Carter, a Greenpeace campaigner who is currently inside the HQ, said:
“Centrica is ripping us off,” claims one of the protesters inside the Centrica HQ, Lawrence Carter. “The bills that they are sending out are soaring, and that’s because Centrica uses too much expensive, imported gas.

Greenpeace has also attacked Centrica for being the least green of the UK big six energy companies for providing the least amount of renewable energy.

Centrica last month announced a new joint venture with Denmark's Dong Energy to development a Round 3 offshore wind farm site to provide more renewable energy for the UK. The project is for the Round 3 Irish Sea zone, said to have potential to generate up to 4.2. Gigawatts from wind farms. Dong agreed to pay Centrica £40 million in cash in March to acquire a 50% stake in the joint venture, called Celtic Array Limited.
