Syrian explorer Gulfsands Petroleum has successfully tested its Khurbet East 102 appraisal well which has flowed gas on test.

Despite the ongoing unrest in Syria, Gulfsands said today that the Khurbet East 102 well which penetrated Triassic Butmah and Kurrachine Dolomite formations encountered oil and gas in the Butmah formation which confirmed the company's 19/2 million barrels of oil equivalent for this formation.

Three 12 metre core sections were obtained from the well with both cores and drill cuttings indicating oil and gas.

During testing, the Butmah formation produced an average of 10.7 MMcf/d of gas over a 5 hour period on a 32/64-inch choke, with 524 b/d of 58º API condensate.

Testing operations were terminated prematurely for safety reasons after failure of a down-hole packer supporting the well test completion string, Gulfsands disclosed.

After deepening the well into the Triassic Kurrachine Dolomite Formation, Gulfsands said this section of the well – which had indicated extensive light oil shows in drill cuttings, failed to flow oil during an open hole test, even after an acid treatment on the reservoir, “...probably as a result of the absence of natural fractures within the low permeability reservoir interval at this location,” the company said.

Khurbet 102 was drilled 2.3 km (1.4 miles) north of the Khurbet East 101 well, drilled earlier last year.

“Interpretation of results from the flow test, electrical wireline log data and reservoir pressure data recovered over the Butmah Formation, confirms the presence of an oil reservoir with an overlying gas cap as seen in the original oil discovery at KHE-101,” the company has concluded
