Britain's Wood Group has secured a major deal to engineer the topsides on a floating production facility for Australia's giant Ichthys gas field.

Through Wood Group Mustang in Houston, the Aberdeen-headquartered energy services giant has succeeded in capturing a major slice of the huge Ichthys gas development in the Browse Basin region off western Australia and operated by Japan's Inpex in partnership with Total.

Ichthys is to use a semi-submersible platform, dubbed as a central processing facility, and the platform topsides will be fitted out with an LNG production facility which will weigh up to 70,000 tonnes, making it the biggest platform topsides in the world so far, according to Wood Group.

The topside deck footprint will be 156 metres by 132 m (514ft x 434ft) and facilities will be designed for a peak export rate of 1,657MMcf/d of gas and it will also be fitted with a liquids transfer system to supply an FPSO for condensate production of approximately 85,000 b/d.

Wood Group Mustang will perform detailed engineering and procurement support for the semi-submersible CPF, after being awarded the deal by Samsung Heavy Industries.

Ichthys is to produce up to 8.4 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of LPG a year,  plus 100,000 b/d of condensate at peak output. The giant gas field lies 850 kilometres (530 miles) south west of Darwin in the Timor Sea and is estimated to contain 12.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, plus 527 million barrels of condensate. And the project entails the semi-submersible CPF, an FPSO for condensate production and requires up to 50 subsea wells with flowlines, as well as a 885 km (550 miles) 42-inch gas export line – making it the longest subsea pipeline in the southern hemisphere and the fourth longest in the world – and it is estimated the project will be worth Aus. $72 billion of export earnings to Australia over 40 years.

A final investment decision to give the US $34 billion project the go ahead was taken in January this year.

Wood Group is the latest in a line of European companies to win work on Ichthys: In February Single Buoy Moorings announced it was to provide a turret mooring system for the FPSO, and Wood Group's JP Kenny subsidiary won Front End Engineering and Design for the gas export pipeline, umbilicals, risers and flowlines in May 2009.
