US-based energy contract giant KBR notched up a 45% rise in operating income for the first quarter 2011 to US $144 million from $99 million in the same period last year.

KBR's total revenue for the quarter was $2.321 bn, down from $2.631 bn a year ago. Nearly half - $1.047 bn – of the first quarter 2011 revenue figure was derived from KBR's hydrocarbons-related activities which was up 14%, and the remainder came from infrastructure, government and power operations, services and ventures.

Noting $24 million of oil and gas income in the first quarter compared with $16 million a year ago, KBR said the rise was “...primarily related to the start of several new projects.” These included Total's CLOV FPSO development, and increased workscope for the Big Foot field facility topsides and for the semi-submersible hull for Chevron's Jack and St Malo developments.

Also KBR has been active in a series of gas monetization projects – Tangguh LNG, Gorgon in Australia, Pearl GTL and the Skikda LNG project.

Recent contracts signalled by KBR include Front End Engineering and Design for Woodside Petroleum's Browse LNG development, and for the Kitmat LNG project, awarded to KBR by Apache Corporation and EOG Resources.

Just recently KBR also confirmed a deal to execute detailed design for Chevron's Jack and St Malo deepwater development in the US Gulf of Mexico, and for the topsides on Chevron's Big Foot project, also in the US Gulf.
