Eni has announced another major new gas find offshore East Africa with its Mamba North East 1 exploration well.

Today Eni said that Mamba North East 1 well, drilled in the east of exploration area 4 offshore Mozambique, has come in and increased the estimated gas in place in the region to 40 trillion cubic feet.

Well results have increased the resource base in area 4 by “at least” 10 tcf, Eni has said, of which 8 tcf are in reservoirs exclusively in area 4.

“This new discovery further improves the potential of the Mamba complex in Area 4 offshore Mozambique now estimated [to] at least 40 tcf of gas in place,” stated the Italian group.

Drilling was carried out at a location 50 kilometres (31 miles) offshore from Capo Delgado in a water depth of 1,848 metres (6,061 feet)

The well encountered 240 meters (787 ft) of gas pay in multiple high-quality Oligocene and Eocene sands, Eni has said, and proved reservoir continuity and pressure communication with Mamba South 1 and Mamba North 1.

Eni's latest well was drilled 15 km (9.3 miles) north east of the Mamba South 1 gas discovery, and 12 km (7.5 miles) south west of the Mamba North 1 gas discovery well.

Another four wells are planned in the region this year to fully appraise the Mamba discovery.

Eni operates the area with 70%, partnered by Galp Energia, KOGAS and KNH.
