Northern Ireland is kicking off its own offshore renewable energy programme with the launch of a wind and tidal licensing round.

Opening the gateway to a major new offshore energy industry. Ireland's Crown Estate ha opened a new leasing round for licences in two areas develop up to 800 Megawatts of wind and wave power

One is designated the Offshore Wind Area, off the south east coast of Country Down which will be leased to a single development company for up to 600 MW.

A second location,  Rathlin Island and Torr Head Strategic Area, a tidal stream area, will be permitted for up to 200 MW.

Tenders are due for a competitive tendering process: “Tenders will be assessed on bidders’ ability deliver fully operational projects by 2020 and a successful conclusion of the leasing rounds would see development rights awarded in the second half of 2012,” the Crown Estate has indicated.

Ultimately the successful bidders will be responsible for delivering on a government target to increase the amount of electricity consumption from renewable sources to 40% by 2020.

Arlene Foster, Northern Ireland Energy Minister said there has been strong interest in a renewable energy licensing round: “This announcement today by The Crown Estate presents the offshore wind and tidal sectors with an excellent opportunity. Northern Ireland offers a strong but accessible offshore resource, world class research facilities at our Universities, a strong engineering tradition and an excellent port infrastructure.”
