New tool can prevent accidents

A new technology, a chain cutter, can prevent fatal accidents like the Bourbon Dolphin accident.

Tananger-based ControlCutter has developed a tool that can cut the through 160 mm of chains in two seconds.

Eight people on Bourbon Dolphin lost their lives when the vessel overturned during anchor handling operations for the Transocean Rather rig near the Rosebank field West of Shetland.

"The control cutter will enable the crew to cut the chains, and provide a safer working environment for the crew and secure the vessel, "Petter Birkeland managing director in ControlCutter says.

The method includes two methods for cutting, if one fails, the other method can be used to cut the chain.

Towards commercialisation

The control cutter has been tested on a full scale onshore. The company will run a pilot in collaboration with Statoil, Innovation Norway, Bourbon Offshore, DOF, Farstad Shipping, Møgster, Havila Shipping.

As part of this, the control cutter will be, and will be installed on a vessel in January 2011. "We haven't decided which vessel yet," he adds.

Birkeland expects that the tool will be available for the markets in the spring next year.
