New turbine for Sweden harbour-side
GE has linked up with Göteborg Energi to install a new 4 Megawatt offshore wind turbine in in Gothenburg harbour which has been specially designed to provide a high level of reliability.
At the European Wind Energy Association conference in Amsterdam this week, the two companies confirmed plans for the first installation of GE's C.1-113 turbine which is built with a direct drive system.
Boasting the generating capacity to supply power to 3,0000 home sand save 15,000 tons of CO2 emissions, GE says the new device will be installed onshore in Risholmsvägen, at the Gothenborg harbour entrance .
The turbine nacelle, tower and blades will are to be carried to the site by boat and installation is due to be complete by mid-December. Turbine foundations, measuring 21 metres in diameter, will be pile-driven into the harbour-side rock, and completion of the project and grid connection is planned for the year end.
GE claims that the new unit's design is well proven, based on a five years of operating experience with a 3.5 MW unit. The new turbine features a direct-drive system, eliminating the need for a gearbox and offering lower operating expense, while the 4.1-113 blade design is designed to maximise energy capture at monopile installation sites.
