Drilling has kicked off on a new well in the Mnazi Bay concession area in Tanzania's Rovuma Basin region targeting gas.

Wentworth Resources reports today that the Ziwani 1 well has commenced drilling targeting Miocene and Oligocene sands and 13 kilometres from the producing Mnazi Bay and Msimbati gas fields in the region.

The well, the fifth in the Mnazi Bay concession area and the first since the MS-1X exploration well was drilled, logged and tested in 2007, and it is being operated by Maurel and Prom. Wentworth is paying 30% of the Ziwani 1 well costs and holds 52.225% equity following the acquisition of Cove Energy's interests in the Mnazi Bay concession.

“This well and the 2012 work programme are designed to explore for additional hydrocarbon resources and to further prove up existing natural gas reserves,” Wentworth declared. “Proving up additional gas resources will enable the concession partners to commit to and deliver agreed quantities of natural gas to the proposed Dar es Salaam to Mnazi Bay pipeline.”

Also Wentworth said it is in talks with its partners and with Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation over a long-term gas supply deal.
