Statoil is planing a manor new four-well exploration campaign in the Skrugard area in the Barents Sea to back up the 400 to 600 million barrels of recoverable oil reserves which have already been found there.

Partnering with Eni Norge and Petoro, Statoil aims to kick of the new drilling schedule later this year, located to the north of the original Skrugard discovery in the PL532 licence and further north than the Snohvit and Goliat developments.

Firstly the partnership aims to drill the Nunatak prospect, on which a well is due to be spudded by December, with the West Hercules semi-submersible.

Drilling a Nunatak is to be followed by wells on thee Skavl prospect located in the same licence, then Iskrystall prospect in neighbouring licence PL608, and Statoil says the fourth prospect is to be identified later.

Knut Harald Nygård, Statoil's vice president for exploration in the Skrugard area explains why new drilling is necessary. “In less than a year, we have made two substantial oil discoveries in PL532, proving 400-600 million barrels of recoverable oil,” he says. “We have also drilled a successful appraisal well on Skrugard confirming volume estimates and collecting data for field development planning.”

But Statoil believes there are still more reserves to be found in the region. “We see good opportunities for further upside in the area, and have identified four new interesting prospects. In some of these we have observed flat spots of the same type as in the Skrugard and Havis discoveries.”

Under the current plans, Statoil and its partners aim to have all four prospects drilled by next Spring, with the aim of proving up sufficient reserves to justify a major new development hub in the Barents Sea. Skrugard and the nearby Havis discovery are already set to become the centrepiece of this new development hub.

“Proving additional volumes in the area would make the development even more robust,” adds Erik Strand Tellefsen, Statoil vice president for Skrugard field development.

Statoil operates PL532 and PL608 with 50% equity in each, while Eni Norge has 30% and Petoro 30% in the two licences.
