Platform crew saved helicopter from disaster

Quick action by a platform crew on Norway's Åsgard B semi-submersible production facility averted a potential disaster when a helicopter had to make a forced landing without brakes on its wheels.

The emergency landing had to be made in high winds as the installation itself was rolling in the sea, and the helicopter continued to move on the platform's helideck until its wheels could be chocked, an investigation report reveals.

Statoil and helicopter operator CHC investigated the incident which took place in January when a scheduled helicopter flight was returning to Kristiansund from the Deepsea Bergen drilling rig.

During the flight the pilot noticed that he had low power in one of the helicopter's hydraulic systems, and opted to land on the Åsgard B platform.

“However an uncontrolled situation occurred when the pilot discovered that the helicopter wheels had lost its [their] braking power,” Statoil reports today on the outcome of its inquiry.

“This situation, combined with wind and installation movements, made the helicopter continue to move until it was secured by wheel chocks. Quick action and a keen eye by the helideck personnel stopped the situation from developing further.”

Potentially, the helicopter could have rolled off the platform, with perhaps disastrous consequences, Statoil has indicated, saying: “The report cannot exclude that the outcome had been different if the helideck personnel had not stopped the helicopter from moving by the use of wheel chocks.”

As a consequence, CHC has since carried out checks on its entire helicopter fleet.

“We regard this as a serious incident and we must learn from it,” said Gunnar Breivik, head of Statoil's logistics and emergency response unit.
