Centrica's planned investment in the UK North Sea Race Bank offshore wind farm looks set to go ahead now that the project has been consented.

In its second quarter result statement, Centrica said today that the Race Bank project has been consented for up to 580 Megawatts of generating capacity.

“We will now progress towards a final investment decision in the first quarter of 2013,” Centrica indicated today.

Depending on the size of the turbines selected for Race Bank, the number of individual turbines could be between 88 and 206, which would be installed in shallow water between 4 and 22 metres (13 – 72 feet).

Race Bank involves developing a site 27 kilometres (16.8 miles) offshore from Blakeney Point on the north Norfolk coast in the Greater Wash area of the Southern North Sea.

But another Centrica offshore wind project, the 540 MW Docking Shoal development, has been refused development consent by DECC, over fears of its potential impact on sea birds. The refusal comes three and a half years after the application was originally submitted for approval.
