Sandstone layers up to 250 metres (820 feet) deep have  been discovered in a region of the Jan Mayen Ridge during a geological survey backed by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Research ship  Akureyri headed off to the Jan Mayen Ridge region from Iceland at the beginning of this month in a quest for more geological data - with the hope of pinpointing prospective oil and gas deposits.  Material has been acquired from five locations on steep subsea cliffs on both the Norwegian and Icelandic sides of the Jan Mayen region

Robert Williams, one of the NPD team on the research trip says the research is not yet far enough advanced to determine if there is oil and gas there.

“I hadn’t expected there to be so much sandstone there, for example,” Williams reports. “Over basalt layers of approx. 250 metres, we measured sandstone layers more than 250 metres thick.”

An ROV equipped with a saw has been used to geological samples from the Jan Mayen Ridge

Working in water depths from 600 metres (1,968 – 6,560 ft) material will be used to extend existing knowledge of the region, which is based on 1980s vintage 3D seismic data and shallow boreholes drilled back in 1974. This has been augmented by 2D data acquired by the NPD in the Jan Mayen region this summer.

The ROV expedition has been led by professor Rolf-Birger Pederson, head of the centre for geobiology at the University of Bergen.
