Seven discoveries so far

Explorers offshore Norway have hit a purple patch so far this year with seven successful wells.

Havis, King Lear, Skarfjell, and Zidane have all been drilled offshore Norway in the six months up to June, along with three other discoveries the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate highlights today.

King Lear stands out as the biggest discovery so far this year: “This drilling operation is not yet complete and the discovery has not been appraised,” the NPD has noted. “However, the preliminary drilling results indicate interesting gas volumes with a view to building new infrastructure in the area. Consideration has also been given to drilling other prospects in the area.

King Lear is the most recent large discovery, drilled with the 2/4-21 well discovery gas and condensate in the Greater Ekofisk field area – it is just 20 km from Ekofisk – and it is one of the biggest. King Lear is estimated to contain between 11 and 32 million cubic metres of oil and condensate (82-240 million  barrels) while Havis, in the Barents Sea drilled with the 7220/7-1 well, appears to be the biggest find, with between 26 – 44 Mcm (195 – 330 million barrels) of oil and between 4 and 6 Bcm (314 to 211 Bcf) of gas.

Bente Nyland, the NPD's general director, is clearly pleased with the Norwegian success rate so far this year. The only concern is that the number of wells is lower than 2011 due, she says, to delays in drilling programmes.

“I note that new drilling operations are often delayed and there is a high level of activity on the Norwegian shelf,” Nyland says.

And the NPD notes that there were 21 exploration wells and eight discoveries in the first half of 2011, compared with 19 exploration wells, including 13 wildcats and six appraisals so far in 2012.

“The reason why fewer exploration wells have been drilled so far this year is in part due to a delay in starting new drilling operations because ongoing drilling operations take longer than anticipated,” says the NPD. “The discovery wells this year have been more complicated and have thus taken longer to complete than last year’s wells...as a result of testing and expanded data acquisition.”

Four finds have been made in the North Sea: Including Kings, operated by Statoil, and Wintershall's Skarfjell field in the Gjøa area. Two other oil finds have been made, 30/6-28, and 33/12-9S, both operated by Statoil Petroleum

In the Norwegian Sea, finds have been made on the 6507/7-15 S Zidane 2 prospect, operated by RWE Dea near the Heidrun field and Mærsk hit oil with the 6406/3-9 well on the T–Rex prospect.

And finally in the Barents Sea, the 7220/7-1 well on the Havis prospect was also successfully drilled, near the earlier Skrugard discovery.
