High quality reservoirs have been encountered during further appraisal drilling and testing of the huge Shaikan structure in Kurdistan drilled by Gulf Keystone Petroleum which has produced aggregate flow rates of up to 14,000 boe/d.

Gulf Keystone reported today on the results obtained so far on the Shaikan 4 appraisal well where six of the seven target structures have now been tested, resulting in the aggregate flow rate of 14,000 boe/d.

“Portions of major intervals, such as the Kurre Chine, Butmah, Mus, Alan and Sargelu formations will continue to be tested and so far aggregate flow rates in excess of 14,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day have been achieved,” the company said. “Portions of the well that appear to be high quality oil reservoir on the electric logs, and where proven commercial flow rates were achieved by testing previous wells, will not be tested.”

Shaikan 4 has been drilled 6 kilometres (3.75 miles) west of the Shaikan 1 discovery well and the first fives tests have been carried out on a northern footwall – the lower side of an inclined fault boundary within the Shaikan structure,  and the flow rates from the footwall prove extensions to Triassic and Jurassic reservoirs outside the central Shaikan structure, Gulf Keystone has disclosed.

Another flow test conducted in a “hanging wall” on the upper side of the inclined fault from a new reservoir in the uppermost Sargelu formation which was not previously flow tested has produced rates in excess of 4,000 boe/d.

A Shaikan 5 well, drilled 6 km to north-east of the Shaikan-2 appraisal, has had to be side-tracked due to drillpipe getting stuck in the hole, and another appraisal, Shaikan 6, located 9 km (5.6 miles) east of Shaikan-2,  is currently drilling.

Tendering is underway for drilling Shaikan 7, an exploration well to test the deepest Triassic and Permian un-drilled horizons in the Shaikan structure.

Gulf Keystone also reports today on results from an extended well test on Shaikan 1 and 3 wells which have so far produced a total of 137,060 barrels of oil between the beginning of January this year and 6 March. “Due to unprecedented cold weather and poor visibility, combined with work required to connect an additional 20,000 barrel storage tank, the average test production between 1 January and 25 February was 2,077 gross barrels of oil per day. Since 25 February,  test production has averaged 5,641 gross bopd,” the company disclosed.

Also tendering is underway for constructing a Shaikan export line and bids are being received, with technical and commercial evaluation to follow, the company says.

Gulf Keystone operates the Shaikan block with 75%, partnered by Kalegran, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hugary's MOL.
