After drilling on the Tybalt prospect in the UK Northern North operator Valiant Petroleum says the technical data from the well will have to be studied further before any firm conclusions can be drawn.

After the 211/8c-5 Tybalt well reached a total measured depth of 13,212 feet (4,028 metres) Valiant said the well penetrated Upper Magnus sandstone, comprising 844 ft (257 m) gross, and 316 ft (96.3 m)of net sand. A total of 210 ft (64nm) of core was successfully recovered from this interval.

“Initial interpretation indicates that the hydrocarbon saturations recorded throughout the section were broadly similar to the 211/8c-4z discovery well drilled in 2010,” Valiant stated. “Porosities were also similar but the permeabilities recorded in the current well were generally at the low end of expectations.”

Reservoir testing was unable to demonstrate move hydrocarbons from the well, and test points lower in the Upper Magnus sand recovered water, while points near the top were described as “tight.”

Drilling at Tybalt was aimed at proving up commercially exploitable volumes via nearby infrastructure including the BP Magnus oil fields and the Dons Area field complex, with pre-drill reserves put at 7 million barrels oil of oil and 6 m bbls net to Valiant, which operated the well with 60%, partnered by Agora Oil and Gas – now a Cairn Energy subsidiary – with 40%.

Valiant has now decided to suspend the well: ”Further technical analysis of the core, log and dynamic test data will be required to assess the size and potential of the Tybalt accumulation,” the company said.

Drilling was carried out by the Borgsten Dolphin semi-submersible, which is next due to drill the Tryfan prospect for Valiant in block 3/17, operated by Apache North Sea and in which Valiant has a 33.33% interest. Thereafter, the rig is due to move to development drilling on the Causeway field.
