UK firm recruited for more rig upgrades

Three major rig upgrades have been won by UK-based marine engineering group Harris Pye worth a total of £10.5 million.

All three projects are due to be completed by the end of next month by the company which is based in Barry, South Wales, although it will execute the three contracts in the UK, Singapore and Brazil.

“Whilst I’d rather not say at this stage who the clients are, they are major players in the offshore oil and gas industry, and the combined value of the contracts is in excess of £10.5 million,” Harris Pye chief executive David Prendergast says.

These latest deals follow a series of contracts previously executed by the company including a refit and refurbishment of Diamond Offshore's drillship Ocean Clipper which involved 247,235 man-hours of work on electrical systems, accommodation, painting, cranes and provision of 250 tonnes of new steel work, plus two miles of pipe replacement. Transformers and motors were also replaced as part of the 90-day project, which was completed in January.

Harris Pye has also recently renovated the Maersk Discoverer while it was on tow from South Africa to Egypt, which has involved new electrical work, rigging heavy piping which was then man-handled into position on board, and then welded in place.
