UK oil output falls to a 16 year low

Britain’s offshore oil and gas industry is failing to prevent a fall in production, new government figures show.

UK offshore oil production fell by the largest margin for 16 years and the country is becoming a bigger net oil importer.

According to the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change UK oil production in the third quarter 2011 fell 22.7% compared with the previous year, to a total of 10,996 thousands tonnes.

“This is the largest annual quarterly decrease since quarterly reporting began in 1995, and reflects near record decreases in crude oil production and record decreases in NGL production,” said the DECC in its latest Energy Statistics bulletin. “Production fell due to maintenance and other production issues,” the bulletin reports.

During the third quarter 2011, the UK became a net importer of oil and oil products, by 8.3 mn tonnes. During the same period in 2010, the UK was also a net importer, but by a lower 4.9 million tonnes.

Gas production was down 29.4% to 103.3 TWh, the DECC figures show. Gas imports were up 33.5% to 121.6 TWh and gas exports were up just 5.3% to 51.9 TWh.

Again, maintenance issues have hit UK production: “This is the lowest quarterly production as well as the largest year-on-year quarterly decrease since quarterly reporting began in 1996,” stated the DECC. “Production levels during 2011 have been lower than anticipated due to an unusual coincidence of planned and unplanned maintenance work.”

Measurement of renewable electricity generation shows that total renewable electricity generation was up 11.7% from 6.7 TWh last year to 7.45 TWh in the third quarter 2011. Onshore wind generation was down 2.4% in the third quarter to 1.90 TWh, while offshore wind generation was up 30.5% to 1.07 TWh. Hydro-power generation was up 41.3% to 1.23 TWh, thermal renewables accounted for a 5.9% rise to 3.25 TWh.
