A new electronic engine monitoring system available from Caterpillar improves monitoring capabilities and adds premium customization features previously unavailable in single-engine monitoring systems. The Cat digital Marine Power Display (MPD) is targeted for worldwide distribution in August 2000.
The digital Marine Power Display is a self-contained engine and transmission monitoring and display system compatible with Cat electronically controlled engines in the 3412E and smaller size ranges. Its compact size and simple wiring requirements-with a single high-speed, two-wire data link connection to the engine's electronic control module-make it easy to install in the vessel pilothouse or various other stations. The display will support up to five different stations per engine.
The new system's display screen makes it easy for vessel operators to monitor engine operation. A high resolution, 320 X 240 dots-per-inch image, combined with transflective screen technology that reflects more or less light as ambient conditions change, provides good readability in all light conditions. And double-edge lit red backlighting provides excellent night viewing.
The LCD display screen is fully graphic-rather than fixed into a set pattern -- allowing a choice of three different standard screen formats as well as optional screen customization features. Standard display selections include gage, digital or bar graph formats in either English or metric units. In the future, software will be available to allow viewing of vessel speed in knots, English miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour.
With optional Builder Tool software available from Caterpillar, up to three different operators can configure screen formats to suit their individual preferences. Builder Tool is compatible with Windows 95/98/NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 PC operating systems.
The Marine Power Display system is designed to allow for added features and expanded capabilities through future software updates. It supports J1939 and J1587/J1708 data link (limited) protocols, allowing flash programming of software updates and custom screen transfers from the user's PC directly to the monitor. The system is also compatible with the Cat Electronic Technician engine diagnostic tool.
All electronics, including the internal audible alarm, are fully pressure-sealed, protecting them from exposure to moisture and salt spray. Mechanical control buttons for the alarm shutoff, screen backlighting adjustment and system navigation are sealed separately from internal electronics for improved environmental protection.
The Cat digital Marine Power Display monitors more engine functions than previously available Cat single-engine monitoring systems. Battery voltage monitoring capability allows vessel operators to verify that alternator voltage output is sufficient to recharge batteries. And display of inlet manifold temperature and engine oil temperature is supported for engines equipped with the appropriate sensors.
Caterpillar has been manufacturing marine diesels since 1935. Caterpillar offers 27 different engine models, 12 featuring state-of-the art electronic engine control. Marine propulsion engines are rated from 85-9655 bhp (63-7200 bkW); marine generator sets from 50-5200 ekW; and marine auxiliary engines from 70-7200 bhp (50-5400 bkW) -- all backed and serviced by the same company.
