London-listed Wessex Exploration has confirmed that the Zaedyus appraisal well currently drilling on the Guyane Maritime Permit area offshore French Guiana is the first of a four -well campaign.

The GM ES 2 Zaedyus appraisal well kicked off on 6 July – with the Stena Drillmax ICE drillship – in the Guyane Maritime Permit and it is designed to test a deeper turbidite fan than that encountered in the earlier GM ES 1 Zaedyus discovery well which was described as a play-opening discovery by the operator Tullow Oil, proving the same geological play type as one that has been encountered offshore West Africa.

Shell is operator on the Zaedyus 2 well in the 24,100 square-kilometre Exclusive Exploration Licence offshore within the Guyane Maritime Permit area offshore French Guiana. Wessex holds a minority 1.25% equity interest in the well through Northpet Investments, a joint venture with another UK-based exploration company, Northern Petroleum. Shell has 45% in the licence, Tullow Oil 27.5% and Total 25%.
